Certificate IV in Training and Assessment – Course Information

Course Overview

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) is designed for people who aspire to become skilled vocational education and training (VET) teachers, trainers, and assessors. This qualification prepares you to deliver high-quality training and assessment across various settings, including Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), businesses, community groups, and schools.

Once you successfully complete the course, you'll be qualified to work as a trainer and assessor. This means you can deliver accredited training and assess students in your area of expertise, in line with VET laws and standards.

Delivery & Assessment

Online Delivery

If you prefer the flexibility of studying online, you can complete the course through our comprehensive online learning pathway.

This option combines self-paced learning modules with trainer support, allowing you to work through your studies at your own pace while accessing expert assistance when you need it.

Key features include:

  • Self-paced online modules with up to 12 months to complete your studies.

  • Personalised trainer support – bookable sessions and email access to expert trainers throughout your course.

  • Comprehensive learning resources – all available through your online student portal.

  • Designed for flexibility – ideal for self-motivated learners who want to study anytime, anywhere, and manage their learning around work or personal commitments.

Practical Assessment Options

  1. Video Submission: To record and submit your practical training sessions for assessment, you’ll need:

    • Four (4) adult participants for three 30-minute group sessions, and

    • Two (2) adults for two 30-minute individual sessions.

  2. Optional In-Person Delivery: As part of the online pathway, you can choose to complete your group practical activities by joining one of our scheduled face-to-face workshops. Please note: additional charges apply for this option.

Virtual Delivery

For learners who prefer structured, trainer-led learning without attending the training centre, the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is also available through virtual classroom delivery.

The virtual program is delivered through live online classes, providing direct interaction with your trainer and other learners while allowing you to complete your training remotely.

Classes are scheduled as:

  • Two 3-hour live virtual sessions per week

  • 8.00 am – 11.00 am

  • Two days per week

  • Over 12 weeks

  • 72 hours of scheduled virtual training in total

This structured format provides approximately the same amount of scheduled training time as the face-to-face delivery, while providing greater flexibility for learners who cannot attend in person.

What to Expect

Virtual classes will be structured differently to the face-to-face program, with the content delivered progressively across the 12-week period rather than in two intensive five-day blocks.

During the live virtual sessions, you will:

  • Participate in trainer-led learning and discussions.

  • Develop practical training and assessment skills.

  • Work through activities and scenarios with your trainer and other learners.

  • Develop and review assessment tools.

  • Practise training and assessment techniques.

  • Explore competency-based assessment and effective facilitation.

  • Develop strategies for supporting and mentoring learners.

  • Apply your knowledge and skills to real-world vocational education and training environments.

Between virtual sessions, you may also be required to complete self-directed learning, assessment activities and online modules through your student portal.

This blended approach combines the benefits of live trainer interaction with the flexibility of online self-paced learning.

Face-to-Face Delivery

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is delivered across two five-day face-to-face training sessions. This provides a total of 10 days of scheduled training, supported by assessment and additional self-directed learning as required.

Session 1 (5 days)

The first five-day session focuses on developing the foundational skills and knowledge required to work effectively in vocational education and training.

You will explore key areas including competency-based assessment, facilitating engaging training sessions, supporting learners and integrating foundation skills into the training and assessment process.

On successful completion of the relevant units, you will receive a partial Statement of Attainment (SOA), marking an important milestone towards completing your qualification.

Session 2 (5 days)

The second five-day session builds on the knowledge and skills developed in Session 1, with a greater focus on practical application in real-world training and assessment environments.

You will develop and review assessment tools, practise training and assessment techniques, support and mentor learners, and further develop your skills as a trainer and assessor.

For planning purposes, please view key dates for Session 2.

You will be assessed on your competency across 12 units and will need to successfully pass both sessions to obtain your full qualification.

Online Modules (Self-Paced)

In addition to the scheduled virtual or face-to-face training, you are required to complete a series of online learning modules and assessment activities which make up the remainder of your course.

These modules allow you to build on the skills and knowledge developed during your scheduled training and explore the various disciplines of Training and Assessment in greater depth.

You can access these modules online and work through them at your own pace, providing flexibility to manage your study around work and personal commitments.
